“For Muslims, this month is a time for reflection, improving spiritual practice and thinking about the less fortunate,” says food writer Dina Begum. “Although we fast between dawn and dusk, food is an intrinsic part of Ramadan. For iftar, the breaking of fast at sunset, light dishes such as soups are followed by hearty ones. The pre-dawn meal, or suhoor, is nutrient dense to set you up for fasting. In many cultures, stews, wholegrain cereals, pasta and bread are eaten, alongside high-protein dishes such as omelettes and grilled chicken.”
