Ingredients

  • Large ice cube or smaller cubes
  • 1 shot espresso (around 30ml), cooled and chilled
  • 30ml sambuca
  • 30ml brandy or Cognac
  • 2 drop/s angostura bitters (optional)
  • 1 orange

Method

  1. Put 1 large or a few smaller ice cubes into a lowball glass and add the espresso, sambuca and brandy. Stir for 30 seconds, until the outside of the glass starts to become frosty. Add the angostura bitters.

  2. Pare a strip of zest from the orange, then cut away any white pith using a sharp knife. Squeeze the zest over the top of the drink to release the oils, rub the strip around the rim of the glass, drop it into the drink, then serve.

Cook’s tip

The spirits in this cocktail should be equal to the quantity of coffee, so it’s worth weighing or measuring the espresso shot before adding the other ingredients

If you’re not sure that you like sambuca, start with 20ml and add the remaining 10ml if you want to.
