A compote is a dish of cooked fresh or dried fruit often sweetened with sugar or honey and flavoured with orange or lemon zest or spices such as cinnamon or ginger. Waitrose sell a variety of compotes including jars of Apricot, Rhubarb or Cherry compote. Fresh mixed compotes are also available including Apple, blackberry, strawberry and blackcurrant, Orange, pink grapefruit and lemon or Apricot and prune.
Uses: Compotes can be served warm or cold as a dessert or for breakfast. Stir into natural yogurt or serve with ice cream or cream. Mix into trifles, muesli, jellies, fruit salads or mousses. Add to pies, puddings and soufflés or blend and serve as a hot or cold sauce.
To store: Ambient jars of compote can be stored in a cool, dry place, once opened store in the fridge and consume within 3 days. Fresh compotes should be stored in the fridge, once opened use within 3 days and eat by the use by date.
